Facebook Death Policy: How To Delete and Memorialize Facebook Accounts

You have three options to choose between when you’re deciding what you’d like to happen to your Facebook profile after you’ve passed away: Memorial Status, Delete Account, Do Nothing.  There are pros and cons to all three approaches and it is up to you to decide what is best for you.  Check out our blog post for more information about each option.

We’ve created this page to help you make a decision and then provide help to your Digital Executor, the person who you’ve tasked with carrying out your wishes after you pass away.

How To Memorialize a Facebook Profile

1. Go to – http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=deceased

2. Enter the required details and click submit.

3. Facebook will verify this information and make a decision, usually within 2 weeks.

How To Delete a Facebook Account

If you have the login and password credentials

1. Login to the Facebook account you wish to delete.

2. Go the “Account” drop-down menu in upper right corner. Click “Help Center”

3. Into search box, type in “delete facebook”

4. Under Facebook FAQs click “I want to permanently delete my account. How do I delete my account?”

5. In the last sentence at the bottom, click “here”

6. A new page will open that has a “Submit” button, click this.

7. Follow the steps, such as entering your password, email, and captcha code, and press “Okay”

If you have problems with this procedure, you can click this link: https://ssl.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=delete_account

Make sure you do not log into the account for 2 weeks, or the account will not be permanently deleted.

Check out this video we’ve created to help walk you through the steps of deleting a Facebook account:

If you do not have the login and password

1. Try to reset the Facebook password if you have access to the deceased person’s email account.

2. Contact Facebook and explain that the person has passed away and would like their profile permantly deleted.

This is much easier said than done.  Facebook’s customer service information is almost impossible to find.  After 30 minutes of Googleing and searching around Facebook, all we could find was the Facebook Help Center, which just kept me running in circles and a Facebook email address: info@facebook.com.  From reading the comments on customer service websites, it looks like you will be very lucky to get a response from Facebook.

3. If you hear back from Facebook, provide them with a copy of their last wishes in their Entrustet dashboard.  Facebook is not an Entrustet parter and may not recognize this document, but it may be a help and follow all of Facebook’s instructions.

If you want to make sure that your account is deleted, make sure you make your last wishes in your Entrustet account and provide your Digital Executor with your login and password.  If you would like your Facebook account memorialized, it is not necessary to input your username and password.
