Twitter Death Policy: How to Access and Delete Twitter Accounts of Deceased Users

Unlike Facebook or Google, you really only have one option if you’d need to access or delete a Twitter account of a deceased user.  Gizmodo has a great article titled What Happens (online) When You Die: Twitter that gives an overview of your options.  We’ve created a step by step guide for deleting a Twitter account of a deceased users, both if you have the username and password of the user and if you do not.

How to Delete and Access Twitter Accounts of Deceased Users With Username and Password

1. Login to the Twitter account you wish to delete.

2. Click Settings in the upper right corner.

3. Click “Deactivate my Account”.

Note: Twitter says that if you deactivate your account, you will not be able to reactivate it at any time.

How to Access or Delete Twitter Accounts of Deceased Users without Usernames and Passwords

Like Yahoo!, Twitter will not divulge access to Twitter accounts for privacy reasons.  If you need to access direct messages or the internals of a deceased person’s Twitter account, the only method available is having the username and password, or litigation.

1. If you have access to the deceased person’s email account, try to reset the twitter password.

2. If this does not work or you do not have access, you should contact Twitter support.
