Ted Talks: Jason Clay on How Big Brands Can Help Save Biodiversity

By Brian Kamin on Sep 2 th, with 2 COMMENTS

Ted talks never cease to amaze me with the eye opening topics and the new way the speakers get me to look at a subject. Another great example of this is Jason Clay with his talk: How Big Brands Can Save Biodiversity. He brings up how we have to rethink our wasteful lifestyles and start not only consuming less, but also producing more with less. Clay states we currently use the resources of about 1.3 planets and crossed our line of sustainability in 1990.

Also, did you know the average American consumes the same amount as 43 Africans? This is absolutely outrageous, and this gets me thinking about how wasteful I have been and about how i can improve my consumption. A great site for calculating your Co2 emissions is www.carbonify.com. Clay goes on saying that this problem is not getting better, in fact it is actually getting way worse. And we need to start producing more with less, becoming more efficient, and consuming less, especially with a quickly growing world population. Clay furthermore brings up that we need to focus on certain areas and commodities and not try and change everything all at once.

So how to do it? Clay says we have to go after a small group because working with 6 billion people in hundreds of different languages or working with thousands of producers is impossible. They found out that 100 companies control 25% of trade of the world’s 15 most significant products. If we can get these companies to become environmentally friendly, the rest will follow. We need companies that we never thought would work together to be sitting down at the same table. Everyone needs to realize that we need to rethink how we produce and consume, or else we won’t be able to sustain our planet. Here at Entrustet we try to do our part and offset our server energy use. To do this we donated money to Powered Green which supports and invests it in wind farms and this helps curbs our Co2 emissions. Every little bit counts.

This was an awesome post. What a great TED Talk! Jason Clay truly understands that the human race is a part of the world’s ecosystem and he is dead on with his philosophy that sustainability will result from internal changes from within our global economy’s biggest corporations.
